It’s Banned Book Week! New Jersey signed The Freedom to Read Act into law at the end of 2024. This act states that books cannot be removed from public schools and libraries based on the origin, views, or background contained within the text because others find it offensive. While our state is one of only a handful that protects our libraries and readers with this act, there are many states that are fighting book bans and challenges at an unprecedented rate. Let your kids read books. With the age they now have access to the internet, there really is no comparison to be made. Reading allows us to consume information and process it in our own way and in our own time. It is an opportunity to experience different cultures, loves, and experiences that we may not otherwise be exposed to. Have open conversations with your kids if they come to you with questions about what they’ve read. But above all else, LET THEM READ! Come check out some of the books that have been challenged or banned throughout the country and let’s raise the best humans we can. #bannedbookweek #bannedbookweekNJ #americanbooksellersassociation #indieboundbooks #indiebound
